The stringed sound of India – the magic of raga music
Matyas Wolter – Sitar, Subahar
Abhirup Roy – Tabla
Matyas Wolter is a highly specialized instrumentalist dedicated to classical South Asian music, also known as Hindusthani raga music. His instruments sitar and surbahar (bass sitar) are considered to be the most difficult stringed instruments in the world to master. With more than twenty years of experience in the field and as one of the few European representatives of this rare art form, Matyas is a virtuoso performer and conscientious researcher of the music and its historical presentation.
He spent five years in Calcutta learning sitar and surbahar music under sitar master Subroto Roy Chowdhury. As a result, he has access to the most extensive repertoire of historical raga instrumental compositions.
Abhirup Roy’s performances have been praised by critics for both his improvisational brilliance and the virtuosity of his technique. His playing lends the tabla an almost magical expressive power and brings it into a lively dialog with other instruments.
Abhirup has won prizes at prestigious competitions and has impressed audiences both as a soloist and as a sought-after accompanist at major concerts in numerous cities in India and abroad. He is now also active as a music director and composes for short films, television productions and albums.
